In 2011, the Board announced no tax increase, making it two years in a row the Supervisors and department heads, were able to maintain a budget which eliminated unnecessary spending and managed to work on infrastructure without placing a financial burden on its residents.
Our Park and Recreation Committee put together an Easter Egg Hunt; a summer picnic featuring a Township vs. Fire Department softball game; Pumpkins in the Park and finished out the year with a holiday tree lighting ceremony at the Shohola Caboose. Hundreds of our residents enjoyed and participated in these activities.
The Township applied for and received two major grants in 2011. One from the Upper Delaware Council, (UDC), for $2700 to update the Township website and the County Block Grant, from the Commissioners, in the amount of $83,500 for our park pavilion.
In July, Shohola Township, through a grant from the UDC, was able to publish a booklet entitled Gas Drilling and Land Use. We thank our staff for putting together this unprecedented booklet which provided answers to regulating gas drilling through responsible ordinance changes. This booklet has been well accepted by the UDC and other Townships.
We continue to monitor the gas drilling and other environmental issues. State legislation is pending and the prudent direction is to await the outcome before implementing any ordinance changes.
Early in 2011 there was a great deal of controversy covering the finances and the direction of the Shohola Fire Department. This resulted in a complete change of leadership. The end result was a solvent energetic Fire Department that averages over 40 people attending meetings and is now able to provide top notch service and assistance to Shohola residents.
The Board appreciates the support from the vast majority of Shohola citizens from across the entire political spectrum. We invite our citizens to come to meetings or to stop in at the Township office to voice concerns.
The Shohola Township staff and officials, while anticipating a busy year, are committed to ensuring that Shohola remains a wonderful place to live and work.
